Genesis 3:8-10

They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Clearly, it was futile for Adam to try to conceal his sins from God, who is all-knowing. In this instance, Adam and Eve knew that they had disobeyed God’s instructions and were afraid that they would incur his wrath. While trying to cover up their sin, Adam actually gave their secret away by saying they were naked. God, however, already knew what Adam and Eve had done.

This verse made me think of other circumstances in the Bible where things were hidden. The word “hidden” in the Bible is interpreted in different ways according to the context in which it is used. In another part of Genesis, Cain was hidden from the Lord for killing his brother, Abel. In the section of scripture, “hidden” refers to Cain being ignored by the Lord for his transgression.

The final example is Mark 4:22 where Jesus says: “There is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was anything kept secret, but that it should come abroad.” In this case, “hid” refers to something that is unknown or unexplained which will be revealed. Jesus is speaking here about his teachings and that they will be understood only by those who listen carefully and have a deep desire to comprehend his teachings. Jesus shares more information with his disciples when they ask for clarification.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me to continue to
develop a deep relationship with you, trusting in you
more fully so that my fears and worries are
banished. Grant me the ability to discern your path
for me, and to understand that you will not hide your
face from me when I falter. Amen
